Rabi said: Which is the correct path that man should choose for himself? That which is a tribute to himself and earns him the respect of his fellow man.
R’ Nachman of Breslov points out that a person must choose that way in life which is correct for him.
The Doresh L’Prakim says there are two paths on the proper course in life. The one which is a tribute to himself refers to his actions in private, conducting himself as a ben Torah. The path that earns him the respect of his fellow man is when his actions are marbeh k’vod shamayim – they sanctify the Name of Hashem.
