“If two sit together and there is no divrei Torah between them, it is a get-together of scoffers…” Rabbeinu Yonah differentiates the scoffers referred to in this mishnah. He explains that there are those who speak derisively of others, and are contemptuous and disdainful of others. They will defame and slander other people without any sense of remorse. He stipulates, however, that in this mishnah R’ Chanina refers to individuals who mock the priorities in life. These are people who would rather waste their time on trivial matters and in pursuit of inane activities, than to occupy themselves with Torah and mitzvos. |
