“… Run quickly to perform an easy mitzvah…” Our sages explain that the lashon of “ratz” indicates a passionate pursuit. R’ Yisroel Salanter explains that if one does not run after the mitzvah he will ultimately be unable to perform it. Rabbeinu Yonah offers two reasons why one should pursue even the least important mitzvah. Firstly, he says, it helps the person develop a habit of performing mitzvos. Once he does one mitzvah it becomes easier to do the second mitzvah. Moreover, he explains, Hashem gives each individual the option to choose between good and bad. Making the choice to do a mitzvah is in and of itself a mitzvah, resulting in additional merit for the individual. |
