Chapter Four

Ben Zoma says: Who is wise? He who learns from every person, as it says, “From all my teachers I gained wisdom.” Who is strong? He who conquers his personal inclination, as it says, “One who is slow to anger is better than a strong man, and one who takes control of his passions is better than one who conquers a city.” Who is rich? He who is happy with his lot, as it says, “When you eat from the toil of your hands you are praiseworthy and it is good for you. You are praiseworthy in this world and it is good for you in the world to come. Who is honored? He who honors others, as it says, “For those who honor Me I will honor, and those who disparage Me shall be disgraced.”
