R’ Chaim Sanzer once stopped a Yid as he passed by his house. He asked him, “If you found a chest full of silver and knew to whom it belonged, would you return it? “Yes,” said the Yid, “I would return the lost item immediately.” R’ Chaim said, “Are you a fool?” A second Yid passed by, and R’ Chaim asked him the same question. The Yid replied, “Do you take me for a fool? You think I would return such a treasure?” R’ Chaim said, “You’re a rasha.” R’ Chaim then called out to a third Yid who was passing by and repeated the question. The Yid responded, “Only when I find the treasure will I know what I would do. It’s possible I will get the better of my yetzer hora for money. But it is also possible that I will not be able to defeat the yetzer hora. Perhaps Hashem will help me withstand the nisayon and I will return the treasure to its owner. But as long as I have not experienced that particular nisayon, I personally do not know what I would do in such a situation.” R’ Chaim said, “Your teshuvah is the correct halacha. You’re a chacham.” |
